24 Jan 08 - Buy-To-Let Industry To Be Reviewed
The problems facing buy-to-let landlords are to be examined
in an effort to improve the sector, the Government has announced.
The review will look at the quality of homes available
to rent, and the impact of the rise in the number of buy-to-let
properties and student tenants.
Some 2.6 million homes in England are rented out by more
than 500,000 private landlords.
But a study by Citizens Advice last year revealed one in
five tenants have had problems with repairs.
It also found landlords often have to tackle people who
fail to pay their rent on time, and anti-social behaviour.
The review will be carried out by the Centre for Housing
Policy at York University, and will be completed by November.
Housing minister Yvette Cooper said: "Most of us have
rented a flat or house at some stage in our lives and the
private rented sector is, at its best, a vital provider
of good housing.
"But too few people are aware of their rights and
responsibilities, either as tenants or landlords.
"We have seen a big increase in the private rented
sector and particularly in buy-to-let. It is important we
review the impact of this."
