17 Mar 08 - Yorkshire Town Has Cheapest
Street
New research claims that the cheapest place to buy a house
in England and Wales is in a former coal mining town in
West Yorkshire.
Mouseprice.com has crowned Oxford Street in South Elmsall
as the most affordable street, as it said homes typically
change hands for just £25,600.
The property website said that Tower Green in the St Hilda's
area of Middlesbrough came in second place, with the average
home worth only £27,400.
Meanwhile, third spot was occupied by Warwick Street in
the South Bank area of the same city where the average value
of a home is £28,000.
The group, which based its research on Land Registry house
prices, stressed that properties in some areas may not have
been sold in normal free market conditions, and that some
may have been bought under right to buy schemes or compulsory
purchase orders.
The research reveals that all of the top 20 cheapest streets
in England and Wales are in northern regions, with nine
streets in the North East, seven in the North West and four
in Yorkshire and the Humber.
